PayPal: How to recover / reduce Costs

Foreign Currency
If your Listing is on the UK site and is listed in £££ and you sell to somebody Overseas who wishes to pay in in Foreign Currency then you can apply a Currency Conversion Rate which is higher than the “low” PayPal rate which will offset the PayPal Charges.
You must put into your Bid Description what rate you are using with a statement like:

Currency Conversion Rate
Dollars $1.70 to the £1
Euros €1.62 to the £1

Due to the rate changing keep an eye on the rate, a good place to look is Auctionpix .

Good Old ££££s
The only way you can get back your PayPal charge is by listing in £££ on the UK site and stating (you have to) that there will be a surcharge of £xx for using PayPal. However, as most Foreign, especially the Americans are veremently oppossed to Surchages you may find that your potential Buyers may drop off too.
You are not allowed to make a % charge of the final bid value so the amount you do Surcharge is a gamble anyway.

PayPal Fiddle Factor
Did you know that you can have both a Premier Account and a Personal Account running at the same time? Did you also know that providing your Buyer transfers the full amount due to you entirely from their PayPal Balance that by using your Personal Account that there are no PayPal Charges?
So you use your Premier Account to accept Credit Card Payments, your Personal Account to receive Balance payments and funds transfered from your Premier to Personal account incure no charge.
As most of you will be operating a Premier Account what is needed to set up an extra account,
  1. Another email address hence new PP account ID
  2. a second credit card/debit card (if your transactions exceed $500 per month)
If you only have a single bank account you can move it from the Premier account to the your Personal one and make all your withdrawls from the Personal account, taking advantage of the fact that funds received from Paypal balances (your Premier Account) can be received by the Personal account for no charge.
££££s using the Full Balance into the Personal Account now looks more attractive as the only cost is the £1 transfer to the UK Bank and if you spread this over say 5 auctions that will bring each auction costing down to 20p
This little fiddle is one way of making a very good system cost you less in the long run if you use PayPal a fair amount.
To save confusion for your buyers you can give them the eMail address for your Personal Account and if they send you a payment which has not been funded from a PayPal balance it can be refunded to them and they can then be asked to send the payment to your other PayPal account.

2006-04-25 13:17:19 Brian (brianthelion49) Hi David
Re: PayPal Protection Policy
PayPal buyers can claim the value of goods not recieved.(I believe max. 3 x ?500 per year.) So unless the seller (me) insists the buyer pays extra for full tracking, PayPal will most likely claw that money out of my account.
I can't offer tracking as an option because even if the buyer says he only wants standard shipping he could still claim if undelivered. The seller must protect himself under the policy by shipping with full tracking.
Maybe something to add to your site but check it out first!!!!
Best regards
Brian

My OH had a charge-back from an American who refused tracking and then clawed-back 8 days after payment !!!!
PayPal did zero 'Investigation', asking only if item was shipped with tracking, before allowing clawback.
Now we are Out Of Pocket and the 'buyer' has her 'win' and her money !
Nice work if you can get it!
What I'm saying is, Brian is Spot On !

PayPal Even suggested to Me that I Always ask Buyers to pay for Tracking when using PayPal, even although they (PayPal) don't do likewise !
Why?
Surely it would be a simple matter for PayPal to proclaim (as they do;)that Claw-backs will only be Granted when tracking has been Paid For.
I'm sure if I was wanting something, badly enough to bid on it from out-with my country of residence, I wouldn't mind the extra cover provided by the Tracking costs.

To date (three days) I've had three 'buyers' Ignore my Request for Tracking and who have insisted on using PayPal.
As a result, I've Had To Refund their payments, causing both parties a lot of Unnecessary bother!
Surely David, this situation can't be allowed to continue unfettered?

Oh ... and I was in to see you, to see if there's a
'No PayPal Without Tracking'
Logo available?
LOL

Just a thought ?

2006-06-11 21:47:49 blueparrot31 I am having a battle with paypal regarding the above. They tell me that the ppp is voluntary, but you try to get the logo removed. I have e-mailed them replies no fewer then 15 times and counting. Each time someone new replies and the run around begins all over again, I have demanded, threatened (nicely of course) for the information to remove the ppp. I was even e-mailed from paypal Australia!
Now I have to email ebay to get the logo removed. I am not getting anywhere but I am not giving up either.
I too have been robbed, there is no other word for it, I have proof of posting the client has only to say it has not arrived and hey presto they refund. The ppp is wide open to fraudulent claims and you cannot appeal this decision on reading the small print.
It is going to need people power constantly complaining about this, as it is us that loose, not them and we have to let them do it. My next step, if I ever get the information I need is the ombudsman, the point that all this began.
If I ever get the correct answer I will let you no !
