There are many differnet types of auction
- Normal/English/Standard
- The most common and widely used auction type, where the bidder who places the highest bid wins the item. A Reserve Price can be set which must be reached or the item is not sold.
- Dutch/Multiple
- Used when auctioning a number of identicle items. The bidders can choose how many of the available items they would like to purchace. All winning bidders pay the lowest winning bid, per item.
- Fixed
- More like a classified advert then an auction. Some sites offer multi item Fixed Price 'auctions'.
- Turbo
- Works like a standard auction but has a low starting price and reserve prices are not allowed. Used to encourage interest in the auction.
- Blind/Sealed/Silent
- Bids are kept hidden until the Auction ends.
- Barter
- The bidders get to offer a combination of goods/services and possibly cash, for the item being offered and the seller is able to choose which offer they will accept.
- RFQ
- Request For Quotation - This is a way of Tendering for some work to be done. The bidder is able to enter details relating to thier offer. The seller can then choose the most suitable offer.
- MaxPrice
- The item offered has a maximum price and a minimum number of bids set, the highest unique valued bid wins the item, each bidder will normal pay a fee to bid. More of a lottery then an auction.
- Reverse
- A Wanted advert, in which each person who responds must place a lower 'bid' then the previous responce.
- Linked
- This auction is a link to the item which is offered for sale on another web site
- Private
- Bidders ID's are not disclosed to anyone except the seller.
- Quick Win/Threshold
- Same as a Standard auction except that the auction ends when a preset threshold bid price is reached.
- Auto Mark Down
- A Multi Item Fixed Price 'auction' with the added twist that over the course of the auction the offer price automatically drops (in a 10 day auction the price would drop 10% each day).
